Thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park, Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is excited to announce a new $3,500 scholarship — the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park Award. This scholarship aims to support students who are passionate about food sustainability, a critical and emerging field in today’s world.

A Generous Contribution to Ease Financial Stress

On May 3, Dorothea Schaab and Stan Cichon from the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park visited Olds College to present a cheque for the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park Award. Olds College President Dr. Ben Cecil and Vice President of Development Todd Ormann were on hand to welcome Schaab and Cichon, expressing their gratitude for the Club’s generosity. During their visit, the Rotary Club representatives toured the campus and the Smart Farm, gaining insights into the innovative programs and facilities at Olds College.

“We’re thankful to the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park for investing in our students and their education at Olds College,” said Dr. Cecil. “The generosity and support of our donors and funders help provide Olds College students with the education and skills they need to succeed. It takes such a burden off our students when donors can help eliminate financial stress, allowing our graduates to focus on the projects they are passionate about and become leaders in their communities and industries.”

Details of the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park Award

Starting in the 2024-25 academic year, the $3,500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student enrolled in the Agricultural Management Diploma program. This scholarship will be awarded for three consecutive years, totaling $10,500 in donations from the Rotary Club.

“Creating sustainable food sources is a cause that Rotary supports,” said Dorothea Schaab, Chair of Scholarships and Bursaries for the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park. “Through this scholarship, we encourage students to make a difference in people’s lives by developing sustainable agricultural resources. Rotary's theme for this year is 'Create Hope in the World.' In an age of food shortages and rising costs, a reliable and sustainable source of food is a basic need. Through the financial contributions of many Rotarians, we are able to improve the health of our communities and support the growing field of technology that makes this possible.”

To be eligible for this award, students must be in their second year of the Agricultural Management Diploma program and have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher during their first year. Preference will be given to students who are primary residents of Calgary and are focusing their studies on food sustainability.

Looking Forward

The Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park is excited to see how the scholarships will benefit future students in their studies toward food sustainability. They are also looking forward to inviting the scholarship recipients to a Rotary Club meeting and luncheon to hear about the students’ projects related to sustainable food supply.

This scholarship represents a significant investment in the future of sustainable agriculture and the development of innovative solutions to ensure food security. Olds College and the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park are proud to support the next generation of leaders in this vital field.
