University of New Brunswick Announces Currie Scholars for 2024-25

Five exceptional high school students have been awarded the prestigious Currie Undergraduate Scholarships at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). Each scholarship, valued at $65,000, recognizes students for their leadership, community involvement, academic excellence, and perseverance.

The Currie Scholarships were established in 2004 by Dr. Richard J. Currie, a distinguished Canadian business leader and philanthropist, who was once a Beaverbrook scholar. Dr. Currie, who served as UNB Chancellor from 2003 to 2013 and became Chancellor Emeritus in 2014, has been instrumental in supporting educational advancements and fostering future leaders.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Daniel Burton from Petty Harbour, N.L., a student at Holy Heart of Mary High School. Daniel is a volleyball player and co-editor of the student newspaper, as well as a member of the youth committee for WritersNL. He will start the Bachelor of Arts program at UNB Fredericton in September.

  • Rozalynd Cummings Ward from Saint John, N.B., a student at Saint John High School. Rozalynd is active in the conservation club and volunteers at Rocmaura Nursing Home. She will also begin the Bachelor of Arts program at UNB Fredericton in September.

  • Max Doyle from Woodmans Point, N.B., a student at Harbour View High School. Max has participated in the debate club, school musical, and played saxophone in various school bands. He will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering at UNB Fredericton.

  • Chad Sheppard from Weston, N.B., a student at Woodstock High School. Chad is involved in basketball, yearbook, and leadership committees and has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Unified Basketball. He will study for a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering at UNB Fredericton.

  • Rebecca Williams-Simms from Grand Bay-Westfield, N.B., a student at Harbour View High School. Rebecca co-chairs the debate team and founded a student-led free lunch program. She will begin the Bachelor of Arts program at UNB Fredericton.

The Currie Undergraduate Scholarships are designed to cover all costs associated with a four-year undergraduate degree at UNB for students graduating from high schools in the Atlantic provinces. This initiative supports the development of future leaders and highlights Dr. Currie’s enduring impact on education and leadership.

Dr. Currie’s academic journey began at UNB in Chemical Engineering and concluded with an MBA from Harvard. He played a crucial role in developing the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER at UNB and has received numerous accolades, including being an Officer of the Order of Canada, a member of the Order of New Brunswick, and a Companion of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.
